Prototype 2 Review

I can say this in great confidence that Prototype 2 completely blows Prototype 1 out of the water. Playing as Sgt James Heller and running riot across an infected New York City. Radical Entertainment ups the ante in the what the fuck department, and making the game a lot more enjoyable with less niggles of annoyance.

The game concludes from the events of Prototype 1. Alex Mercer the good guy or you were so to believe now the bad guy in Prototype 2. After a little recap on how New York City is standing today, you dive straight into the Red Zone as Sgt James Heller. A guy who has a wife & child and just doing his job to protect and being a pawn to stop the virus from spreading. After getting hit by the infected, Alex Mercer stalks the wreckage with Heller coming to his senses. From here shit hits the fan and you will learn the basics of the game controls. Once you finally outrun this huge bloody beast it will go into a scene. Mercer easily handles Heller and stabs him to become infected.

I shall leave the story in-depth view alone now. After that you will learn what motives Mercer has and Blackwatch. You will be jumping, gliding and consuming your way through New York City. Prototype 2 is a lot more action, though at times feels like there could be more of it with great set pieces.

Consuming is a huge part of the games foundation. Consuming enables Heller to gain info and infiltrate Blackwatch compounds to find people and gain new info. You will of course have your side missions which want you to do just that or running across rooftops to pick up dropped cargo from a downed chopper. They can get repetitive very early on, but its great sneaking about as a consumed Blackwatch guard and performing the bio bomb kill, which spawns out these tentacles of death and watch a bloody mess happen right in front of you.

The enemies are ok but there is no variety. Switching among Brawlers who are easy, Blackwatch guards – annoying when against loads of rocket target lock soldiers, hydra’s and these hammerfist flubnuts who are easy to kill. You will go against a massive enemy but for story purposes, which I will not go into. I will leave that monstrosity for you to experience.

You have many weapons at your disposal again story progression to unlock those and then consuming Brawlers to upgrade them to become more powerful and gnarly looking. It’s also worth fnding all the in-game collectibles as you will unlock mutations which give you great benefits from extra health, extra buck with a punch. There are many mutations to get in all categories and it will come in handy especially when playing on hard, though it is an easy affair to play on hard. Completing the side missions as well will give you mutations so all in all, do not rush the story campaign, but balance it out when playing on hard.

Prototype 2 is a great game and you will get much fun out of it. If you did not like the first game so much like I, then you will love Prototype 2. I could not sing even louder of praise of this sequel. All the problems that Prototype 1 had, Prototype 2 answers them and completes the package with a fine polish. The end boss can be annoying, but isn’t as frustrating as the end boss in Prototype 1.

If you like sandbox games, blood and gore. Prototype 2 is the game for you.

9/10
